Why We Choose Solid Wood Over Veneer (And Why It Matters)

Why We Choose Solid Wood Over Veneer (And Why It Matters)

In a world filled with beautiful furniture options, it’s easy to assume that all pieces are built the same — especially when the price tag is high. But here’s the truth: not all wood furniture is created equal.

At The Woodhills, we’ve made a conscious decision to build with solid wood, not engineered cores or veneers. It’s a choice rooted in craftsmanship, durability, and integrity. And we want to share why that matters — especially when comparing our pieces to big-name brands that often use veneered products.

What Is Veneer Furniture?

Veneer furniture is made by applying a thin layer of real wood (often less than 1/16” thick) over a core made of engineered materials like MDF or plywood. It can look beautiful on the surface — and many high-end brands like RH (Restoration Hardware) and others use veneer extensively in their tables, cabinets, and more.

Veneer isn’t always bad. In fact, when done well, it can create uniform grain patterns and reduce warping on wide surfaces. But it’s important to understand what you’re actually paying for.

Why We Use Solid Wood Instead

Our furniture is crafted from thick slabs of real hardwood — walnut, oak, maple, and others. This means:

  • No veneers, no shortcuts

  • Authentic character and grain that runs all the way through

  • Strength you can feel — not just see

  • Tables that can be sanded, repaired, and refinished for generations

Yes, it takes more time. And yes, we obsess over tiny imperfections, spend hours sanding, and make sure each joint is tight and every board is aligned with care. That’s the kind of detail mass-produced veneer pieces can’t replicate.

Why Do Veneer Tables Cost So Much?

Here’s the thing — most people don’t know the difference between veneer and solid wood. Big companies invest heavily in branding, styling, and showrooms. They’re selling you a look, not always longevity.

Their costs often go into marketing, photography, and scale — not necessarily materials or craftsmanship.

That’s why a veneered table from a luxury brand might cost the same (or more) than a handmade solid wood table from a small shop like ours. But once you understand what’s underneath, it’s easier to see the value difference.

Solid Wood = Long-Term Value

We believe furniture should grow with you — not wear out or be replaced in five years.

Solid wood:

  • Develops a beautiful patina with age

  • Can be refinished over and over

  • Holds its value over time

  • Can be passed down, not thrown away

It’s not just furniture. It’s an investment in craftsmanship, in sustainability, and in something that’s truly yours.

You’re Not Just Buying a Table — You’re Buying a Story

Every piece we build is made to order. No shortcuts. No prefab panels. Just real wood, skilled hands, and a genuine commitment to quality.

If you’ve been comparing tables or wondering why prices vary so much between brands, we hope this helped. And if you ever want to see the difference in person — or learn more about how your table is made — our door is always open.
