How Does a Custom Built-In Project Work?

How Does a Custom Built-In Project Work?

One of the most common questions we get is, "How does the process work?" Unlike ordering furniture online or buying stock cabinets from a big-box store, custom built-ins are designed specifically for your home, your needs, and your style. Every project is different, but the overall process is usually very similar.

Step 1: The Initial Conversation

One of our recent projects was an office built-in for our neighbor, Whitney. Like many homeowners, she had a vision but wasn't quite sure where to start.

The first thing we ask is simple:

  • What wall will the built-in go on?
  • How large is the space?
  • Do you have inspiration photos?
  • What functions do you need it to serve?

We believe every built-in should be designed around how you actually use your space. Some people need lots of shelving for books and décor. Others need storage for files, printers, office supplies, or electronics. Some want a simple, clean design while others want decorative features like arches, fluted panels, crown molding, or inset cabinetry. The goal isn't to fit you into a standard design—it's to create something that feels like it was made specifically for your home.

Step 2: Ballpark Pricing

Once we have a rough understanding of the project, we'll provide a ballpark price range. This helps both of us determine whether we're in the right range before moving forward with a detailed design and consultation. We find that being transparent about pricing early on helps save everyone time and allows us to focus on creating something that fits both the vision and the budget.

Step 3: The Design Consultation

After that, we'll schedule an in-home consultation. This is one of our favorite parts of the process because it's where the project really starts to come to life.

During the consultation, we'll bring samples of:

  • Door styles
  • Paint colors
  • Stain colors
  • Wood species
  • Finish samples

While photos online are helpful, there's nothing quite like holding a sample in your hand and seeing how it looks in your home's lighting. A color that looks perfect on a phone screen can look completely different in a room with natural sunlight.

During the consultation, we'll take precise measurements and discuss all of the details that make a built-in truly custom such as:

  • Crown molding
  • Arches
  • Fluted panels
  • Open shelving
  • Drawer layouts
  • Cabinet configurations
  • Lighting options
  • Decorative molding
  • Hardware selections

Sometimes clients come into the meeting wanting a simple shaker door, and by the end of the consultation they've discovered details they never knew existed. Our job is to help guide you through the possibilities without overwhelming you with too many choices.

Step 4: Rendering and Final Approval

Once the consultation is complete, we'll create a rendering of the project. This allows you to visualize the built-in before construction begins and gives us an opportunity to make any final adjustments.

The rendering helps answer questions like:

  • Is the spacing correct?
  • Are the shelves the right size?
  • Do the proportions feel balanced?
  • Is there enough storage?

Once the rendering is approved, we'll finalize pricing and schedule the project.

Step 5: Building Everything In-House

One thing that sets us apart from many builders is that we build everything ourselves. We don't outsource cabinet boxes, doors, drawers, or face frames to another company. Every component is built in our shop by our team. Since every home is different, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Building everything in-house allows us to maintain quality control from start to finish and ensures every piece is made specifically for your project.

Step 6: Finishing

We also handle the finishing process ourselves. Whether your project is painted or stained, we prefer to complete as much of the finishing work as possible in our shop where we can control the environment and maintain consistency. For stained projects, we'll professionally stain and clear coat the pieces before installation. Some painted projects may require final finishing work on-site depending on the design, but our goal is always to deliver the highest-quality finish possible.

Step 7: Installation Day

Once everything is complete, installation day arrives. We carefully load the project into our trailer and head to your home. Most office built-ins take us about 6-8 hours to install, although larger projects can take longer. Many people are surprised by how much work goes into installation, but houses are rarely perfectly square.

  • Floors may be uneven.
  • Walls may not be perfectly straight.
  • Corners may be slightly off.

Part of our job is making adjustments on-site so that the finished built-in looks like it was always meant to be there.

We'll bring specialized tools and equipment to handle any necessary adjustments, work around outlets, and ensure everything is level and aligned correctly. The little details matter. We pay close attention to door and drawer alignment, spacing, trim work, and overall fit and finish because those details are what separate a good built-in from a great one.

Step 8: The Final Walkthrough

Once everything is installed, we'll walk you through the finished project and make sure you're happy with the result. Seeing a once-empty wall transformed into a beautiful and functional space is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

At The Woodhills, we don't just build cabinetry—we create spaces that are designed around the way people live. Every built-in is custom, every home is unique, and every project is built with the same attention to detail and craftsmanship that we've built our reputation on.
